Haunting Adeline and Books Like It, Matched to the Part You Loved

What the book is, what it puts you through, and six next reads sorted by which half of it actually hooked you.

"He knew her name. And she had no idea how."

Those two lines close the first chapter of one of our own serials, and they're the whole engine of the stalker romance in miniature. Somebody knows more about you than you know about him. You should be afraid. Part of you is curious anyway. Haunting Adeline by H. D. Carlton takes that feeling and pushes it further than almost any book that has ever been sold on a front table.

So, the short answer to the question that brought most people here: yes, Haunting Adeline is a dark romance, and it sits at the far end of it. Stalking, home intrusion, consent that is blurry or absent, and a second plot about human trafficking. If you've finished it and want more, the list below sorts the next reads by what you liked. If you haven't started it yet, read the warnings section first. That's the advice the author gives too.

What the book is

Adeline Reilly is a thriller writer who moves into Parsons Manor, the old family house she inherits after her grandmother dies. The house has a ghost story attached and a stack of old diaries from her great-grandmother. It also has a watcher. Zade Meadows has noticed her, and he doesn't hide it for long: there are roses, there are notes, there are nights he's in the house while she sleeps. Outside the romance, Zade runs a secret operation that hunts human traffickers, and that work pulls Adeline into a much bigger plot.

It's the first half of the Cat and Mouse duet, first published in 2021, and it became a TikTok phenomenon a year or two later, mostly through readers filming their reactions to particular scenes.

Why it blew up

Lots of books have a stalker hero. Four things set this one apart.

You get his side. The chapters alternate between Adeline and Zade, so you're inside the head of the man doing the watching, which is either the most compelling or the most upsetting part of the book depending on who you are. Most readers say it's both.

The setting does half the work. A big inherited house, a ghost, a family secret in old handwriting: Carlton gives the stalker plot the bones of a gothic novel, which is why the book reads as atmospheric instead of just explicit. If the house was what you loved, our guide to the dark romance aesthetic shows how far that look reaches.

The props became a fandom. Single red roses and a hero with a scarred face are now shorthand all over BookTok for this specific book.

It doesn't stop. Book one ends on a cliffhanger, book two exists, and the duet is finished, so the binge is built in.

Before you read: the warnings, honestly

The author opens the book with a content list that is famously long, and tells readers to take it seriously. We agree. This is a summary, not a replacement for her list:

Content notes for the duet

  • Stalking, surveillance and home intrusion, by the hero
  • Dubious consent and non-consent scenes involving the main couple
  • Gun play and knife play during sex
  • Graphic violence, torture and murder
  • Human trafficking, including sexual abuse of victims; much heavier in book two
  • References to past sexual assault and abuse

Heat is 5 out of 5 and darkness is 5 out of 5, and they are separate scales: the book is both very explicit and very disturbing. 🌹Books like Haunting Adeline, by the part you loved

Most "books like" lists stack every dark romance in one pile. That doesn't help much, because Haunting Adeline is several books in one, and readers loved different parts of it. Find yours on the labels.

More of these, ranked against each other, are in our best dark romance books list. If you'd rather commit to something long, our dark romance series guide rates every series on heat and darkness separately. Got a different title in mind? Put it into the books-like finder.

An honest note before you click. None of our serials is a human stalker book at the Haunting Adeline level, and none comes close to its heat. We checked: every serial below was scanned chapter by chapter, and the explicit scenes are few and far apart. What they share with Carlton's book is possession, captivity and a hero who won't let go. Most of them are shifter or paranormal romance. The counts are approximate.

Crimson Obsession

The closest in feel, and the source of the quote at the top. Vivian Hart works the Monarch Lounge, a members' club where power is the currency, and Alexander Blackwood decides she owes him for a spilled drink. "Nothing is an accident. Not here. Not with me." A human hero and a slow tightening of control, with no paranormal element. It's closed-door so far, so come for the dread.

No explicit chapters in what's published. 🌶️ 1/5 for now

My Ex-Alpha's Obsession

Seven years after Maya Reyes escaped her alpha, a car crash puts her back in his territory, snowed into his cabin. Second-chance romance with an obsessive hero she has real reasons to fear. Our tags flag the relationship as abusive, and the book doesn't pretend otherwise.

A couple of explicit chapters across 85. 🌶️ 2/5

Start in the snow

His Bloody Secret

A paramedic sees a dying billionaire's wounds close on their own, and his security team takes her so she can't tell anyone. Captivity in sterile medical rooms, a hero whose interest becomes obsession, and a vampire secret. The most Zade-like of the bunch in how quickly "she stays" becomes the whole plot.

About 5 of 86 chapters with on-page sex. 🌶️ 3/5

Desert Alpha Pact

Pulled out of a wasteland by twin alpha rulers, she finds a fated bond to both of them and a pact that makes them her stepbrothers. The terms are submit or die. Captive, shared-mate, step-sibling taboo, and tagged abusive. Dark on paper; read it knowing that.

About 4 of 84 chapters, the first very early. 🌶️ 3/5

Forgetting Their Claim, Wolf Shogun's Bride and Alpha's Forbidden Secret

Three more captive-shifter stories. In Forgetting Their Claim, Eva wakes with no memory in the home of alpha twins who call her their mate, and her body remembers a violence her mind doesn't; it has the most heat of the three, at about 7 of 88 chapters. Wolf Shogun's Bride puts a human warrior in the den of the wolf lord who captured her, a fated bond with a feudal Japanese setting. Alpha's Forbidden Secret is the gentlest: a photographer catches a man turning into a wolf and gets taken for it, and it's closed-door so far.

Quick answers

Is Haunting Adeline a dark romance?

Yes. It's a stalker dark romance: the hero watches, follows and enters the heroine's home without permission, and the book includes dubious and non-consensual scenes, graphic violence and a human-trafficking plot. It's one of the most extreme books in the genre's mainstream.

How spicy is Haunting Adeline?

Very. We rate it 5 out of 5 for heat: frequent, long, explicit scenes, several of them built around fear, gun play and consent that is unclear or absent. Darkness is rated separately, and it's also at the top of the scale.

What order do you read the Cat and Mouse duet in?

Haunting Adeline first, then Hunting Adeline. Book one ends on a cliffhanger, so have book two ready. There are only two books in the duet.

What age is Haunting Adeline for?

Adults only. The author marks it 18+ and it should be treated that way. It's not a young adult book, whatever the TikTok algorithm suggests.
