Rejection is the werewolf genre's favourite opening beat because it costs the writer nothing and buys everything. One sentence from the alpha and the heroine has lost her mate, her rank, usually her pack, and often her wolf. The rest of the serial is a ledger: each thing taken is a run of chapters taking it back, and the last entry, the alpha himself, is either reclaimed or refused. That is why these books run long.
