You finished Haunting Adeline at 1 a.m. and want to watch something with the same pulse. Bad news first: it hasn't been adapted, and most of the books BookTok calls dark romance haven't. So the best dark romance movies come from two other places. Some are prestige films that happen to be about obsessive, dangerous love. Others are the handful of BookTok-era adaptations, which are hotter and much less good.
This list ranks both kinds together, and it's honest about the gap. Films almost always cool a story down. Ratings, studio notes and the simple fact that a camera can't sit inside a narrator's head mean the book version is nearly always darker. Each pick below says where to watch it and what happens when you go to the page.
🎬The ranked list
-
The Handmaiden (2016)
A pickpocket is hired as maid to a sheltered heiress so a con man can marry the heiress and steal her fortune. Then the film rewinds and shows you the same events from the other side. Erotic, cruel to its villains, and the most satisfying romance on this list.

Phantom Thread (2017)
A controlling London couturier and the young woman who finds an unusual, poisonous way to make him need her. Nothing explicit happens and it's still one of the most unsettling love stories ever filmed. The breakfast scene is a horror movie.

Crimson Peak (2015)
A young American writer marries a charming English baronet and moves into his rotting mansion, where the walls bleed red clay and his sister watches everything. Gorgeous to look at. The romance is a trap, which is the point.

Secretary (2002)
A young woman just out of a psychiatric hospital takes a typing job with a strange, exacting lawyer, and the two discover they want the same unusual thing. Odd, tender, and still the most respectful film about a power-exchange relationship.
Where to watchRent or buy on the major digital stores; subscription homes change by country, so check a streaming search like JustWatch. The book versionMary Gaitskill's short story 'Secretary' from Bad Behavior (1988). Much bleaker; the film invented the happy ending. -
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
Gary Oldman's Dracula crosses oceans of time for a woman he believes is his reincarnated wife. Lush, theatrical, frequently ridiculous, very horny.
Where to watchRent or buy on the major digital stores; subscription homes change by country, so check a streaming search like JustWatch. The book versionStoker's 1897 novel, told in letters and diaries. No reincarnated love story; the film added it. The book's Dracula is a predator, not a suitor. -
Rebecca (1940)
A nameless young bride, a brooding widower, and a housekeeper who worships the dead first wife. The obsession here isn't between the couple; it's the house's.
Where to watchRent or buy on the major digital stores; subscription homes change by country, so check a streaming search like JustWatch. The book versionDaphne du Maurier's 1938 novel. The censors made Hitchcock soften what Maxim did to Rebecca. The book doesn't soften it, and it's far darker for that. -
Nosferatu (2024)
Ellen has been bound to an ancient vampire since she was a girl, and he's coming to collect. This is not a romance in any comforting sense; it's about obsession as possession, and it's frightening.

365 Days (2020)
A Sicilian mafia boss abducts a woman and gives her 365 days to fall in love with him. It's the film most people mean by "dark romance movie", it was a huge Netflix hit, and it is genuinely bad. The sex is plentiful; the consent framing was widely criticised.

Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)
A literature student and a controlling billionaire with a contract. The film is far tamer and more awkward than the book, and Dakota Johnson does a lot of heavy lifting.

James' 2011 novel, which began as Twilight fan fiction and is considerably more explicit. It's steamy rather than truly dark; we break that down in books like Fifty Shades. -
Through My Window (2022)

Where to watchStreams on Netflix, with two sequels (2023, 2024).The book versionAriana Godoy's novel, which started on Wattpad. Closer to angsty new-adult romance than dark romance.
Why the book is almost always darker
Three things happen when dark romance hits the screen. First, rating pressure: a studio wants an R, not an NC-17, so explicit scenes get trimmed. Second, the narrator disappears. Dark romance runs on interior monologue, the heroine's horror and want arguing in the same paragraph, and a camera can only show her face. Third, consent gets visible. On the page the reader is inside the fantasy; on screen you're watching a stranger get grabbed, and audiences react to that very differently. That's why 365 Days played as more troubling on film than the trope does on the page, and why the best films here (Phantom Thread, The Handmaiden) make the darkness psychological rather than physical.
So if a film's yearning got you, the book is where it gets sharper. Our smut glossary entry covers the vocabulary, what dark romance actually is lays out the genre's reader contract, and if you'd rather listen than read, there's a dark romance audiobooks list.
