Romance books like Fifty Shades of Grey, matched by what you actually liked

Fifty Shades is four books stacked on top of each other: a contract, a billionaire, some kink, and a power gap. Pick the one you came for.

Fifty Shades of Grey is not dark romance, and most lists of romance books like 50 Shades get it wrong for that reason. They hand you a stalker book with a captive heroine and call it the same thing. It isn't. Christian Grey is controlling, sometimes alarmingly so, but the whole engine of the book is negotiation. He sends Ana a contract, they argue over hard and soft limits by email, and she never signs it. Strip that out and what you have left is a dark romance, which is a different contract with the reader altogether. If that's what you want, the dark romance list is the right page. If you want what Fifty was, keep reading.

The trick is working out which part of Fifty hooked you, because almost no other book has all four parts. The eight below are grouped by the part they carry, and each one says plainly what doesn't carry over.

🔑Which part of Fifty did you love?

📝If it was the contract

The Kiss Quotient

Helen Hoang · contemporary · 2018

Stella is a brilliant econometrician who is bad at sex and decides to treat it like any other problem: she hires a professional to teach her. Michael is an escort whose family has no idea what he does for a living. It's Fifty's negotiation flipped, because the heroine is the one with money and a plan, and her autism is central to the story in a way that's warm rather than clinical. The lesson-plan structure gives you that contract feeling without a single paddle.

Carries
The arrangement, the first-time awakening
Doesn't
Kink, billionaire hero (she's the one with money)

Release Me

J. Kenner · Stark trilogy · 2013

A former tennis star turned billionaire offers Nikki a million dollars to pose nude for a portrait, and the arrangement comes with his terms attached. It came out right in the Fifty boom and openly plays the same game: a deal with terms, a damaged rich man, a heroine with secrets of her own. Nikki's history of self-harm is handled with more weight than you'd expect from the premise. Two more books follow.

Carries
The deal, the billionaire, light kink
Doesn't
An innocent narrator (Nikki knows exactly what she's agreeing to)

🚁If it was the billionaire

Bared to You

Sylvia Day · Crossfire series · 2012

The closest relative Fifty has. Gideon Cross is a young, possessive, impossibly rich man in New York, and Eva has just moved to the city and starts a job in his building. The difference is that both of them are survivors of childhood abuse, so the "fix him" arc runs both ways and their fights read like two people panicking at once. It's hotter and more frequent than Fifty, with very little kink. Five books follow this one couple.

Carries
The billionaire, the wounded hero, the intensity
Doesn't
The contract, the red room

King of Wrath

Ana Huang · Kings of Sin · 2023

Vivian and Dante are pushed into an engagement neither of them wanted. She's the daughter of new money, he's a cold CEO who treats her like a business transaction. It's a marriage-of-convenience book, which is the 2020s version of Fifty's contract: the terms are set by families instead of a document. The billionaire life is laid on thick, and the hero thaws on schedule.

Carries
The billionaire, an arrangement with terms
Doesn't
Kink, an inexperienced heroine

For more men with jets and bad attitudes, the billionaire romance hub has the whole shelf.

⛓️If it was the kink

The Siren

Tiffany Reisz · Original Sinners · 2012

If Fifty felt like someone describing BDSM from across the street, this is someone who lives in the building. Nora Sutherlin writes erotica, works as a dominatrix, and is trying to get a serious editor to take her new book. Her past belongs to Søren, who is a Catholic priest and a sadist, in that order. It's sharp, literary and properly kinky, with real pain play, and some readers bounce off how far it goes. Read the content notes first.

Carries
The kink, at full strength
Doesn't
A billionaire, a naive narrator, a tidy HEA in book one

The Boss

Abigail Barnette · 2014

The author also writes as Jenny Trout, who spent years publishing chapter-by-chapter takedowns of Fifty Shades. So this is the corrective version: a younger woman, an older rich man who turns out to be her new boss at a fashion magazine years after their one-night stand, and a power-exchange relationship where they talk about everything before they try it. If Grey's tracking-your-phone routine put you off, this is Fifty with the bits you hated taken out.

Carries
The kink, the power gap, the rich older hero
Doesn't
The controlling behavior, which is the point

If you want to go past these, the super spicy list is the deep end, and the smut glossary entry explains where erotic romance stops and erotica begins.

🏢If it was the power gap

A bit of family history: Fifty Shades started as Twilight fan fiction. So did both books in this section. Same source, very different results.

Beautiful Bastard

Christina Lauren · 2013

An MBA intern and the executive she works for hate each other, and that turns into sex in every room of the office that has a door, plus some that don't. There's no contract and no kink beyond the semi-public sex. What carries over from Fifty is the office power gap and the heat, and Chloe gives back as good as she gets, which Ana never quite managed. Shorter than Fifty, and a lot funnier.

Carries
The boss dynamic, the heat
Doesn't
A contract, a wounded hero, BDSM

Gabriel's Inferno

Sylvain Reynard · 2011

A Dante scholar at the University of Toronto, cold, arrogant and hiding a past, and the quiet graduate student who has loved him since a single night years ago that he doesn't remember. Nothing here is slower; the heat arrives late and gently. It does share Fifty's appeal of the older man who has to earn the right to touch her. If an age gap plus a lot of Italian poetry sounds good, this is your book.

Carries
The power gap, the wounded hero, the inexperienced heroine
Doesn't
Kink, frequent heat

🌶️Heat, compared against Fifty

Fifty is the baseline row. We put it at 4/5: explicit and frequent, but the kink is mostly light. Anything rated 5 here goes further. To check a book that isn't on this list, the spice level checker does the same job.

On "free books to read online like 50 Shades": Fifty itself isn't free, though most libraries lend the ebook through Libby. What is free is chapter one of every serial below. Of the 259 books in the NanoReads catalog, 54 are tagged billionaire and 10 are tagged contract. These seven are the ones closest to Fifty's mix. They're tagged steamy and erotic. We haven't rated every chapter, so heat here is going by the tags, and one carries an "abusive" tag, which we flag below.

His Debt, Her Body is the contract, taken further. Her father dies and leaves her five million dollars in debt to Julian Thorne, who offers to wipe it if she becomes his live-in property for a year, subject to every command. That's Fifty's contract with the safeword removed. It's tagged abusive, so go in knowing that. Read chapter one free.

Debt to the Devil gives her fifty million dollars to find and seven days to do it, and Damien Blackwood, "the Devil of Wall Street", wants something other than money. Same deal-with-terms engine, at higher stakes. Start the first chapter.

His Secret Asset flips the power. She's undercover inside Corbin Global to expose its CEO, and he looks at her as if he already knows. Pick this if you liked Fifty's cat-and-mouse emails. Open it free.

Master of the House is the power gap: her family home now belongs to Dante Bellini, and she works in it, cataloging what used to be hers, under a bargain that trades her expertise for her family's survival. Chapter one is on us.

My Controlling Boss has Zara forced to pose as her billionaire boss's fiancée at a media summit in the Bahamas, with her job on the line. It's fake dating, so lighter than the rest. Try it free.

The Billionaire's Watch is about the controlling streak. After an investigation nearly gets her killed, Rhys Blackwood locks her in his penthouse "for protection". Her word for him is jailer. Read the opening.

Reaper's Reckoning is the outlier. The hero runs a motorcycle club called the Hellhounds instead of a company, and it starts with her brother's gambling debt and a 72-hour deadline. Same debt-and-deal setup, but rougher. Begin chapter one.
