Thirty-nine of the 84 English serials NanoReads publishes in-house are exactly twenty chapters long. At roughly ten minutes a chapter, that is a little over three hours: a long bath, a flight to somewhere warm, one evening you don't have to explain to anyone. It is also about the length at which a spicy story stops being a story and starts being a commitment. So this page is about adult short stories in that sense: fiction for grown-ups, explicit or close to it, that you can open and finish without the book asking anything of tomorrow.
That last clause is the whole test. If you searched "short stories for adults" hoping for Chekhov and Munro, you're on the wrong page, and I mean that kindly: the literary short stories list, sorted by how long each takes to finish is where Joyce and Le Guin live. The cliffhanger tax
Serials run on a tax. Every chapter break withholds something, and you pay for the next one with your attention, your sleep, or in the worse apps your coins. A short adult story refuses to charge it. The heat has to be worth it inside the story, because there is no "next week" for the author to hide behind. I've come to think that makes the short form the honest one. A serial can coast on a hook; a short story that isn't good is just over.
Which is also why so many "adult short stories" online are bad. Strip out the cliffhanger and a lot of erotica has nothing left to hold it up. The famous counterexample is Anaïs Nin, who wrote the stories that became Delta of Venus in the 1940s for a collector paying a dollar a page, a man who kept sending word to leave out the poetry and concentrate on the sex. She mostly refused, and the stories outlived him because the poetry was what made the sex land. That's the bar to carry into anything with "steamy" on the tag.
So here's the test I run on a short adult story before I'll recommend it. Three questions. A story can fail one and still be a good night; it can't fail two.
Does the heat change anything?
In a serial, a sex scene can leave the plot exactly where it found it and get away with it. In a short story it can't. If nobody is different afterwards, it was filler with the lights off.
Is the consent legible?
Not sanitized, legible. Dark stories can run on coercion and still pass, as long as the story knows what it's doing and tells you. The failure is a "yes" that appears from nowhere because the word count ran out.
Can you leave?
The ending has to close a door. An "ending" that's really a teaser for a sequel is a serial chapter wearing a short story's coat.
How much of tonight are you spending?
Pick one. Each chip drops you at the serials that fit, with the heat and the exits marked.
Heat labels come from each serial's platform tags (steamy, erotic, abusive, and so on), not from me reading every chapter. Run any title through the spice level checker if a tag isn't enough to go on.

Two of the five are twenty-chapter serials, the closest NanoReads gets to an adult short story proper: there's still a chapter break every ten minutes, but there's a last one, and it's tonight.

The detail the blurb hangs everything on is his cold touch: the platform files this under paranormal with a fangs tag, and the temperature of his hands is how the story tells you what he is before anyone says it. Reincarnated-love plots suit the short form because the wanting arrives pre-loaded; the question isn't whether these two want each other, it's whether Lila's version of herself survives his version of her. On my three tests: the heat moves things (every stare of his rewrites what she thinks she knows), consent is the subject rather than an afterthought, and at twenty chapters there is a real door at the end. Tagged steamy, forbidden, temptation. Gothic and fated rather than filthy, if you're choosing by mood.

Burning Resentments

Avery Quinn has a charity gala to run and an ex whose world has just walked back into hers; she's then forced to work alongside Jace Ryder, a chef the blurb calls notorious, with a past "as fiery as his temper." That is a very old engine (proximity, a shared deadline, someone sabotaging the event from the shadows) and the right one for a short story because it needs no setup. What I like is how literally the title is meant: her resentment and his temper are the fuel, and the blurb's own question is whether that burns her down or gets converted into something else. One honesty note: the catalog shelves this under vampire romance while the blurb is all galas and kitchens. Read it as a contemporary; if fangs turn up, they weren't promised. Tagged steamy, sexy, affair, elite.

I want a week of this, actually
Fair. The other three run 87 to 91 chapters, fifteen-ish hours, not short by any reading of the word. They're here because they're the same appetite at a different dose, and because two share a heroine: Johanna Reddick has written the "genius wife walks out on the man who stole her work" plot twice, with a different Elara Vance each time, and the pair is an oddly good lesson in what length buys.
Breaking the Rules

She drops her seven-carat ring into his trophy and leaves without a word, then takes the chief engineer job with his rival, Leo Ryder, and the blurb does not pretend the respect stays professional. The ring-in-the-trophy beat is the reason it's on this page: that is a short story's ending used as a serial's opening, the cleanest exit in the genre spent before the story has properly started. What follows is sabotage, media storms and Marcus scrambling to win her back. Tagged erotic and steamy, and the blurb itself swears, which tells you the register. Of the two Reddick books it's the faster, angrier one.

His Biggest Mistake

Same author, same first name, a different marriage. This Elara spent ten years designing Alistair Croft's Skyline Tower, and at the opening, on their anniversary, he credits it to his young protégée in front of everyone. She signs the divorce papers, takes her blueprints, and partners with his rival Leo Martinez, which the blurb says "ignites into fiery passion." Put next to Breaking the Rules it's the more patient book: the betrayal is professional before it's romantic, the revenge is a building rather than a race, and ninety-one chapters give the anger somewhere to go. Two things to know. It carries the abusive tag on top of steamy and alpha, so expect Alistair's fight-back to get ugly. And it has no erotic tag, so I'd set expectations at hot rather than explicit.

His Debt, Her Body

The blurb is in first person and reads like a confession: her father is dead, she has inherited five million dollars of his debt, and Julian Thorne offers to erase it if she becomes his live-in property for a year, "subject to his every command." This is the darkest thing on the page and the most-read of the five, which is not a contradiction; it's the reason captor romances sell. It fails my second test in the exact way dark erotica is supposed to: the consent is not legible because the whole story is about whether it can become legible, and the blurb's closing question is whether she can endure his world without losing herself. If that framing is a hard no for you, skip it; that's the right answer. If it isn't, it's tagged erotic, abusive, contract and survival, and ninety-one chapters of it is a lot.

What length buys
The two Reddick books side by side are the clearest case I know for why the short form and the serial aren't rivals. Breaking the Rules spends its best scene immediately and then has to invent eighty-six chapters of reasons to keep you. His Biggest Mistake holds its anger and builds a tower with it. Only the second could be cut to twenty chapters without losing the point, because the point of the first is the sprint. So: if what you want is the release (the ring in the trophy, the cold hand at the masquerade), go short and let it end. If what you want is the ache stretched over a week of commutes, the cliffhanger tax is a fair price, and the spicy stories shelf sorts serials by how long each makes you wait. The in-between length has a name, too; the novella entry in the glossary pins down where the lines fall.

Where are the free short stories for adults? On NanoReads, chapter one of every serial above is free, and the twenty-chapter titles cost the least to finish if you decide to.
