Status Check in Sector 4

The power grid in Sector 4 went down three times before dawn.

Artoris Pendrake knew the pattern by heart. First, the residential blocks on the eastern stack would drop — the oldest relay in the whole tenement cluster, corroded down to bare copper in two places he had patched himself with salvaged solder and a prayer. Then the filtration system on sublevel six would lose pump pressure, and the water would go brown for about forty minutes until the capacitor bank on the roof bled enough reserve charge to kick the system back online. Finally, the atmospheric scrubber on the main corridor would start cycling at half-rate, and the whole building would smell like burnt insulation and machine oil until someone physically reset the controller board. That someone was always Artoris.

He was already crouched in front of the scrubber housing when the third fault hit, his scavenged terminal balanced on one knee, its cracked screen throwing pale blue light across the narrow maintenance corridor. The readout showed what he already suspected: the unit's logic controller had locked itself into a fault loop, the same error code cycling over and over, SNMP communication between the controller and the building's central monitor completely dead. The monitor thought the scrubber was offline. The scrubber thought it was waiting for a handshake from the monitor. Neither of them were going to blink first.

He touched the housing with his bare hand, fingers spread flat against the metal casing. Something happened that he had stopped trying to explain years ago. He felt the system, not in any way he could put into words, but in the way you feel the rhythm of a machine through the soles of your boots when you're standing on a running engine. The fault loop was right there, obvious as a frayed wire, and he simply reached around it. The controller board reset. The scrubber hummed back to full speed. The corridor air tasted a little less like it was trying to kill him.

He pulled his hand back and checked the terminal. Signal restored. Uptime confirmed. He logged the fix in his personal record the same way he logged everything, because in Sector 4, if you didn't keep your own records, nothing you did ever existed.

He had been doing this for years. Monitoring the grid, verifying what was actually failed versus what just looked failed from the outside, patching the things he could reach and flagging the things he couldn't. The building's official maintenance contractor hadn't set foot in the sublevel corridors in eighteen months. The tenement's three hundred residents ate, breathed, and drank water because a twenty-year-old with no formal credentials and a scavenged toolkit kept the infrastructure running one fix at a time.

He was halfway back to his room when he heard the boots.

Not the shuffle of neighbors or the heavy drag of work shifts changing over. These were precise, evenly spaced, the sound of people who had been trained to move in a specific way and had never stopped. He counted four sets before he reached the stairwell and saw them waiting at the bottom: four figures in matte-gray security gear with no insignia he recognized, helmets sealed, sidearms holstered but visible. Behind them, at a comfortable distance that made it clear he had no interest in closing it himself, stood a man Artoris had seen exactly once before, on a news feed two years ago when the man had bought a majority stake in the Sector 4 mining rights and announced he was restructuring the ore contracts.

Alistair Sterling-Vane was taller in person. He wore a suit that probably cost more than the entire tenement block's annual utility budget, a dark charcoal fabric with a subtle luminescent weave that caught the corridor's failing light and threw it back cleaner than it deserved. His silver hair was perfect. His emerald eyes moved over Artoris the way a technician's eyes move over a system diagram, looking for the architecture underneath, cataloging, assessing.

He carried a cane. Artoris noted that the man walked fine without leaning on it.

"You're Artoris Pendrake," Sterling-Vane said. It wasn't a question.

"I live here," Artoris said. "Who let you into my building?"

One of the security detail shifted slightly, but Sterling-Vane raised a single finger and the movement stopped. He almost smiled. "I own your building," he said. "As of approximately six hours ago. The previous owner was persuaded to accept a generous offer."

Artoris looked at the four armed security personnel, then back at Sterling-Vane. He kept his expression even. He had learned a long time ago that showing exactly how much a situation unsettled him was the fastest way to lose whatever small advantage you had. "What do you want?"

"I want to watch you work," Sterling-Vane said simply. "There's a situation one level down. Your building's water filtration pump controller. The primary sensor array is reporting a cascade fault. My technical staff have reviewed the readout remotely and estimate a six-hour repair window, minimum."

Artoris waited.

"I'd like to see how long it takes you," Sterling-Vane said.

It wasn't a request. Not exactly. But it wasn't quite an order either, and Artoris filed that detail away and turned for the sublevel stairs without another word.

The filtration controller room was cramped and smelled like standing water and rust. The pump assembly was a twenty-year-old municipal-grade unit that had been running past its service life for so long it had forgotten what maintenance felt like. The cascade fault on the readout was real, six separate sensor nodes reporting conflicting data, the controller unable to reconcile the inputs and holding the pump offline as a precaution. Sterling-Vane and two of the security detail stood in the doorway. The other two, Artoris assumed, were somewhere above them making sure the exits stayed organized.

He crouched in front of the controller housing and ran through the readout on his terminal first. He had a process, and he stuck to it even when he knew the answer was probably right in front of him. You verify the problem is actually what the alert says it is before you start touching things. He had learned that the hard way at fifteen when he had reset a relay that turned out to be the only thing keeping a gas line valve closed.

The sensor nodes weren't actually failed. Three of them had lost their network registration with the controller, probably during the earlier power fault. They were still physically online, still reading accurate data, but the controller couldn't see them and was treating the blank spaces as catastrophic failures. He could see it clearly in the data stream on his terminal, three nodes with valid signal, zero acknowledged packets, the handshake broken on the controller's end.

He put his hand on the housing.

The re-registration took about four seconds. The controller accepted the nodes, reconciled the sensor data, confirmed the pump was physically intact, and brought the system back online. Brown water ran through the pipes for thirty seconds and then cleared.

He stood up and checked the total elapsed time on his terminal. Eight minutes, including the diagnostic review.

He heard Sterling-Vane exhale behind him. Not dramatically. Just a quiet, controlled release of breath, the sound of a man who had been holding a hypothesis for a long time and had just seen it confirmed.

"How did you know which nodes had lost registration?" Sterling-Vane asked.

"The fault pattern," Artoris said. "If the nodes were physically dead, the error codes would be different. The controller was showing communication loss, not hardware failure. Different problem, different fix."

"You read that from the readout?"

Artoris hesitated. "Partly."

Sterling-Vane studied him. "And the rest?"

Artoris didn't answer that one. He had never had a satisfactory answer for it, and he was not going to invent one for a man he had met eleven minutes ago.

Sterling-Vane reached into the breast pocket of his suit and produced a small device, flat and black, about the size of his palm. He held it out toward Artoris without stepping closer. "Touch this."

Artoris looked at it. "What is it?"

"An encrypted data module. The encryption key is a biological signature. No one on my staff has been able to open it." He paused. "It has been in my possession for a decade. I acquired it from an archive that has been sealed for approximately five thousand years."

The corridor was very quiet except for the sound of the pump running again below them.

Artoris took the device and held it. For a moment nothing happened. Then the same thing that always happened, happened. The device woke up. Not with a sound or a light, but in the way he could feel it, a recognition, like a system coming out of standby because the right credentials had finally arrived. A single line of text appeared on the device's surface, rendered in a script that was old enough that he couldn't read it, but the meaning arrived in his mind anyway, clear as a diagnostic return.

Identity confirmed. Pendragon sequence active.

He set the device down on top of the controller housing and stepped back from it. His pulse was steady. He made sure of that.

"You've been looking for me," he said. It wasn't an accusation. It was just the logical conclusion the data supported.

"For ten years," Sterling-Vane confirmed. "Your bio-signature is referenced in that archive. By name. By genetic sequence. By a physical description that matches you within a margin I find statistically impossible to dismiss as coincidence." He picked the device up and returned it to his pocket. "I have spent a considerable amount of resources confirming that you are what that file says you are."

"And what does it say I am?"

Sterling-Vane looked at him for a long moment. "It says you are necessary," he said. "The specific nature of that necessity will take some time to explain. More time than this corridor comfortably allows." He turned toward the stairwell. "I have a transport waiting. You will come with me."

"I haven't agreed to that," Artoris said.

Sterling-Vane paused on the first step and looked back over his shoulder. The expression on his face was not impatience. It was closer to respect, the expression of a man who actually expected the push-back and was quietly glad to receive it. "No," he said. "You haven't. I'm asking you to choose."

Artoris looked at the filtration controller running steadily behind him. He thought about the eastern relay he had patched with salvaged solder. He thought about the atmospheric scrubber that would lock up again in two weeks and the three hundred people above him who would be breathing recycled machine air until he climbed back into the maintenance corridor and reset it again. He thought about the fact that in ten years, the building would still be exactly the same, and so would he.

He went upstairs to get his kit bag. It took three minutes. He didn't take much, because he didn't have much, and because he had a feeling that wherever this man was taking him, what he owned in Sector 4 would not be the relevant currency.

The transport was waiting at the sector's outer cargo platform, a sleek, white-hulled vessel that had no business being docked in Fringe-Sector 4. It was the kind of ship that belonged in the upper transit lanes above the core districts, where the air was filtered to medical-grade standards and the light came from the actual sun rather than through forty meters of industrial smog. Two more security personnel were posted at the boarding ramp. They didn't search him, which told Artoris either that Sterling-Vane trusted his own assessment of people, or that the man had equipment that had already done the job without Artoris noticing.

The interior of the transport was cold and clean. The seating was real material, not the pressed-fiber substitute that passed for upholstery in every vehicle Artoris had ever been inside. The air smelled like nothing, which was its own kind of overwhelming after a lifetime of air that always smelled like something. He sat down and held his kit bag on his lap and watched Sector 4 through the viewport as the transport lifted off the platform.

The sector looked worse from above than it did from inside. The tenement stacks were gray and crowded, their rooftop arrays of salvaged solar panels and rain collectors catching the dim light like the scales of something very old and very tired. The smog layer sat at about two hundred meters, a permanent ceiling the color of old bruises. Below it, the grid of streets and service corridors was packed with people who had been born there and would most likely die there, running their own versions of the same maintenance loops he had been running, keeping the minimum viable systems alive one patch at a time.

He watched until the smog layer closed over the sector and there was nothing left to see.

Sterling-Vane settled into the seat across from him and set his cane across his knees. He studied Artoris with that same cataloging look, unhurried, thorough.

"You're not going to ask me where we're going," Sterling-Vane observed.

"You'll tell me what you need me to know when you decide I need to know it," Artoris said. "Asking before then won't change the timeline."

Sterling-Vane did smile this time, a controlled thing that didn't quite reach his eyes but was genuine for all that. "Your dossier mentioned that you were perceptive," he said. "It undersold the case."

"You have a dossier on me."

"I have had a dossier on you since you were ten years old and you restored power to a collapsed mine shaft in Sector 7 using nothing but a junction box and a piece of wire. Six miners survived because of it. The official report attributed the recovery to a faulty auto-reset in the main breaker." He paused. "It was not a faulty auto-reset."

Artoris said nothing.

"You have been maintaining critical infrastructure in Sector 4 without credentials, without compensation, and without recognition for six years," Sterling-Vane continued. "You have never failed to restore a system you have put your hands on. Not once. That is not a normal distribution of outcomes for an untrained technician working with end-of-life equipment."

"I just understand how systems work," Artoris said. "When something fails, there's always a reason. You find the reason, you fix it. It's not complicated."

"For you, perhaps not," Sterling-Vane said. "For every credentialed engineer I have on my payroll, it is frequently very complicated indeed." He leaned back slightly. "The galaxy is full of systems that are failing, Artoris. Not just water pumps and atmospheric scrubbers. I am talking about the systems that keep the human species functioning. The military. The supply chains. The political frameworks. They are all running past their service life on salvaged patches and reset loops, and the people responsible for maintaining them are doing exactly what your sector's official maintenance contractor was doing. Nothing."

The transport climbed above the cloud layer. Through the viewport, the sky went from gray to deep violet to the clean, absolute black of open space, and the stars came out all at once.

"You're not just recruiting a technician," Artoris said.

"No," Sterling-Vane said. "I am not."

"Then what are you recruiting?"

Sterling-Vane was quiet for a moment, looking not at Artoris but at the stars beyond the viewport. When he spoke, his voice was careful in a way it had not been before, measured, like a man quoting something he had memorized long ago and was only now saying aloud for the first time. "The archive I showed you in the corridor," he said, "contains a great deal more than a bio-signature reference. It contains a record of a leadership structure that was operational five thousand years ago. A structure designed for exactly this kind of systemic collapse." He turned back to Artoris. "The file is very specific about what is needed. And it is very specific about where to find it."

Artoris looked at him. He thought about the text that had appeared on the device when he touched it, the words he couldn't read but somehow understood. He thought about the fact that the device had been sealed for five millennia and had opened for him in four seconds.

"Your life as a scavenger," Sterling-Vane said, "has reached its end-of-life cycle. What comes next is a new operational phase. The parameters will be demanding. The failure tolerance will be low. And the stakes will be considerably higher than a water pump in Sector 4." He held Artoris's gaze. "I need to know that you understand the difference between what I'm describing and a standard career opportunity."

"I understand the difference," Artoris said.

"Good." Sterling-Vane reached forward and pressed a control on the armrest panel. The viewport's ambient filter adjusted, and the stars sharpened to brilliant, unfiltered points against the black. "Then rest. We have several hours before we reach the estate, and you will need to be functional for what comes next."

Artoris did not rest. He sat with his kit bag in his lap and his eyes on the stars and thought about systems, the kind you could touch and the kind you couldn't, the kind that failed quietly over years until the pressure built to something catastrophic, and the kind that just needed the right set of hands to wake them back up. He thought about six miners in a collapsed shaft and a junction box and a piece of wire. He thought about an encrypted file that had been waiting five thousand years for someone's DNA to match a sequence that no one alive had written.

He thought about the text on the device, and the word it had used.

Pendragon.

He didn't know what it meant yet. But he had learned early in life that when a system throws an error code you don't recognize, the correct response is not to ignore it. You log it. You track it. You follow the diagnostic path wherever it leads, even when the path runs through territory you have never mapped before.

The stars held steady outside the viewport as the transport moved deeper into the upper transit lanes, leaving Sector 4 and its gray tenement stacks and its perpetual smog ceiling farther behind with every passing minute. Artoris watched them until the familiar shape of the industrial cluster was gone entirely, replaced by open space and the distant bright threads of navigation beacons marking the shipping corridors between worlds he had never seen.

The current support I provide for Sector 4 is completely with servers after the network part was moved to another contractor. For the servers I verify if they are actually up or down. We have to do this as SolarWinds verifies Server status via SNMP. Some times SNMP stops on a server but it is still up, you can access the server via RDP using the server name and the server is pingable too. If the server is actually down, unable to Ping IP/FQDN or RDP either IP/FQDN then we need to verify if the site(FSA/RMA/FPAC etc)is down them mark the ticket as such. If the site is up then Verify if the ILO is up, if the ILO is down then send the ticket out to local TSD to very connectivity of the Chassis and then power cycle as needed. If the ILO is up, then log into web interface to determine why the server is not responding (powered off, Stuck in reboot after update, ILO giving an error....) and remedy as able. If still not able to get server to respond then engage FMI Tier 2. For Azure and Hyper-V servers we wait for a while to see if it was just slow restoring after a reboot/update. As my team does not have access to the Azure environment we have to send any non-responsive servers to FMI tier 2 to be resolved. Local datacenter servers have been moved from VMWare to Microsoft Hyper-V (again we do not have access when we did have access on the VMWare instances), we have to send these to FMI Tier 2 also. Across all platforms I watch for services that have stopped, if they do not auto start then I have to either start them again via SolarWinds or I have to log into each server and start the service manually. This all becomes even more important each month during Microsoft Server Patching and then the following weekend for any servers that were not able to update the prior weekend.

An Additional Role of the IOC to Monitor degradations and outages that affect servers, applications, services, anything other than network related. IOC is responsible for posting outage/degradation alerts and to the Message Board as needed , spinning up Teams Meetings to gather the support needed to resolve these issues. While the issues are active we will also update Alerts, Message Board posts, and tickets as required. IOC is also responsible for contacting the after-hours On-call server engineer(s) for any production outages that are not caused by known outages/ degradations or planned maintenance. We also, contact our Management Team for these events. On my shifts I work alone as the team is down to 5 people not including the team lead or our FMI Manager.

He kept his eyes on the stars, and he waited for the next diagnostic cycle to begin.
