Jerry Douglas has spent much of his life learning to notice the things other people pass by—the expression someone tries to hide, the quiet beauty of an ordinary place, the weight carried in a memory, and the stories that exist in the spaces between what people say and what they mean. A lifelong Ohioan, Jerry has spent nearly three decades working in manufacturing, taking on roles ranging from the factory floor to leadership, planning, scheduling, and operations. Those years introduced him to an extraordinary collection of ordinary people and taught him something that eventually found its way into his writing: everyone is carrying a story, and the most interesting ones are rarely visible from the outside. Away from work, Jerry is a photographer, storyteller, and lifelong observer. Through photography, he learned to search for moments that might otherwise disappear—a flower illuminated for only a few seconds by the right light, an unguarded expression, an empty road disappearing toward someplace unknown. Writing became another way of doing the same thing. Instead of preserving moments with a camera, he began preserving them with words. His stories are shaped by a fascination with memory, identity, loss, resilience, and the strange ways our experiences make us who we are. Although his fiction may wander into impossible worlds, the people who inhabit them face deeply human questions: What parts of ourselves are worth holding onto? What happens when something we love disappears? How much of who we are is determined by what we remember? And if everything familiar were stripped away, what would remain? Jerry lives in Ohio, where he continues to photograph the natural world, write stories, take the occasional long drive simply to see where the road leads, and collect more ideas than he will probably ever have time to finish.

Every spell demands a sacrifice of the mind. In a realm governed by the Veil, casting magic requires giving up personal memories. A minor charm costs the memory of a pleasant meal; a devastating ward erases a first love or a childhood home. For fifteen years, Martin Pryce has lived quietly as a humble carpenter in Briar Glen, content with knowing nothing of his life before waking up with a scarred body and an empty mind. His peaceful existence shatters when a rogue thief, Elena Sloan, arrives clutching a stolen imperial artifact. Inside lies an unthinkable truth: the memories paid to the Veil do not vanish into the ether. They are hoarded by the ruling ministry to fuel an empire built on stolen souls. Relentlessly pursued by an elite inquisitor who has burned away her own humanity to become the perfect hunter, Martin is forced to tap into deadly magical instincts he never knew he possessed. But every spell he casts to protect his companions burns away the fragile new life he cherishes—unraveling the dark, forgotten past he once tried to escape. To break the empire's grand illusion, Martin must wage a war where victory might cost him his very identity.
