by Hilary Pedroso De Souza
Four kingdoms. Four heirs. One impossible choice. For a thousand years, the Four Seasonal Kingdoms have existed in a fragile harmony, governed by an ancient pact: heirs must marry to secure alliances. Princess Haelina of Summer is bound to the steady Prince of Autumn. Prince Hyron of Winter is destined for the radiant Princess of Spring. They were born to rule, not to love. But as they train together at the prestigious Academy of Seasons, a forbidden spark ignites. Haelina and Hyron find themselves drawn to each other with a magnetic force that defies their crowns. Their connection is more than a simple betrayal; it is a catalyst. When they are together, the natural world begins to fracture. Snow falls on sun-drenched beaches, and golden summer blooms pierce through the permafrost of the north. As a forgotten prophecy resurfaces, the two must decide if their love is a herald of destruction or the key to a long-lost balance. With their best friends standing in the way of their hearts and the fate of the world hanging on their obedience, Haelina and Hyron must choose between the lives they were promised and the love they cannot live without. To save their kingdoms, they might just have to break the world.

The Weight of Gold and Glass
The first snow of winter fell quietly over the Academy of Seasons.
Haelina stood by the large window of the Library of Solstice, watching white flakes drift from the dark sky. Winter had always been her favorite season, even though she belonged to Summer. There was something peaceful about the snow. Something that made the world feel softer. As a princess of the Summer Kingdom, she was accustomed to the relentless heat of the Eternal Solstice, where the sun never truly set and the warmth was a heavy, constant companion. Here, the coolness of the glass against her fingertips was a quiet relief, a rare indulgence she knew she would soon have to surrender.
The graduation was coming. With every passing day, the heavy stone walls of the Academy felt less like a sanctuary and more like a beautifully constructed cage. Once they walked across the courtyard to receive their royal seals, her freedom would vanish. The golden crown of Summer would no longer be a distant promise; it would become a weight she had to carry. And with that crown came Jace.
She would marry Jace Ashwood. The future ruler of Autumn. A union of fire and balance, carefully negotiated before either of them had taken their first breaths.
"You always look at snow like it's a miracle."
She smiled before even turning around. She knew that voice.
Hyron.
He walked toward her with his hands in his pockets and the familiar grin that always made her heart beat a little faster. His pale skin seemed to catch the dim light of the library lanterns, and his dark blond hair was slightly messy, as if he had just come from the training grounds.
"Maybe it is a miracle," Haelina replied, turning her head back toward the glass. "Have you ever thought about how strange it is? Every snowflake is different."
Hyron laughed softly, stepping up to stand beside her. "Only you would stand in a warm library and think deeply about snow."
"And only you would come here just to make fun of me."
For a moment, neither of them spoke. The library was quiet, filled only with the sound of pages turning somewhere in the distance. Outside, the snow continued to fall, dusting the stone ledges in perfect silence. The reflection in the dark glass showed both of them standing side by side. It was a simple thing, but it made her chest ache. Soon, their futures would begin. Soon, they would be forced to return to their respective kingdoms, separated by vast borders and ancient laws.
She would marry Jace.
Hyron would marry Kalissa.
Everyone already knew that. Everyone except her heart seemed willing to accept it.
"Are you ready for the final trials?" Hyron asked, his voice dropping to a quieter, more serious tone. He wasn't looking at her anymore. He was watching a single snowflake cling to the outside of the pane.
"As ready as I can be," Haelina said, though the words felt empty. The trials were the last hurdle before graduation. They were supposed to test their mastery of their elemental magic, proving they were fit to rule. But to Haelina, the trials were just a countdown. Every test passed was a step closer to the end of this life. "And you?"
"I'll survive them," Hyron said, a faint, bittersweet smile touching his lips. "We always do."
The silence returned, heavier this time. It was the silence of things left unsaid. Haelina felt the familiar warmth of her Summer magic stirring beneath her skin, a restless heat that usually brought her comfort. But as Hyron shifted closer, his shoulder almost brushing hers, something strange happened. On the small wooden table beside the window, a single candle burned in a brass holder. Haelina watched, her breath catching in her throat, as the steady golden flame suddenly wavered. The orange light shuddered, turning a pale, icy blue. It flickered with a quiet, frozen intensity, casting cold shadows across the dark wood.
Haelina stared at the blue flame, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked at Hyron, but he was still staring out the window, his jaw tight. He didn't say a word about the candle. He didn't acknowledge the way the air between them had suddenly turned both burning hot and freezing cold. They both simply pretended not to notice, hiding the truth behind a mask of royal composure. But the tension in the air was thick, suffocating and undeniable.
A soft rustling sound from her pocket reminded her of the burden she carried. Earlier that morning, a messenger had delivered a sealed letter from her father, King Aurelian. She had slipped it into her coat, hoping to ignore it, but its presence felt like a brand. Haelina reached down, her fingers brushing the stiff parchment. She pulled it out slowly, unfolding it just enough to read the elegant, sweeping script she knew so well.
The Summer Council has reached an agreement with Autumn, her father had written. We must secure the alliance before the winter storms block the mountain passes. The official engagement ceremony has been moved forward. It will take place immediately following your graduation. Prepare yourself, my star.
Her hands trembled slightly as she folded the paper back up and hid it away. The future wasn't waiting for her anymore. It was rushing toward her, faster than she could run.
"Haelina?" Hyron's voice was soft, laced with a sudden concern. He had noticed the change in her posture, the quiet panic that had settled over her features. "What is it?"
"Nothing," she lied, forcing a smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Just thinking about how much studying we still have to do."
Before Hyron could press her further, the heavy wooden doors of the library creaked open, and the sound of bright laughter echoed through the high-arched ceiling. The spell holding them by the window was instantly broken.
"I told you they'd be in here!" Kalissa's cheerful voice carried across the quiet room. She practically floated toward them, her warm bronze skin glowing against the soft green of her woolen cloak. Behind her walked Jace, his hands tucked casually into his belt, a lazy, familiar grin on his face. His dark curly hair was damp from the snow, and his collar was characteristically unbuttoned.
"You two are far too serious," Jace said, throwing an arm around Hyron's shoulders with a rough familiarity. "It's the first snow of the year, and you're hiding in the dustiest corner of the Academy."
"Some of us actually care about passing the trials, Jace," Haelina teased, the playful banter returning to her lips like second nature, though her chest still felt tight. She looked at Kalissa, her closest friend, and felt a sharp stab of guilt. Kalissa's dark eyes were bright with excitement, completely unaware of the secrets lingering in the cold air.
"Oh, forget the trials for one night," Kalissa said, grabbing Haelina's hands. Her fingers were warm, smelling faintly of the crushed lavender she always wore. "We are planning the graduation party. Silas and Selene are already setting up the music in the courtyard, and Silas swears he found a way to keep the cider warm using Autumn hearth-stones. You have to come."
"We really should study," Hyron said, though his tone was light, matching Jace's easy demeanor.
"No excuses," Jace insisted, nudging Hyron with his elbow. "The future can wait until tomorrow. Tonight, we celebrate."
Haelina looked at the three of them. Jace, who had been her loyal companion since they were children. Kalissa, who was the sister she had never had. And Hyron, the boy she loved but could never have. They were a family, bound by years of shared secrets, laughter, and tears. But beneath the warmth of their friendship, the foundation was beginning to crack.
The candle on the table had returned to its natural golden hue, the icy blue gone as if it had never been there at all. Yet, as Haelina allowed Kalissa to pull her away from the window, she stole one last glance back at the glass. The reflection showed the four of them, laughing and standing together, a perfect picture of the future the kingdoms wanted. But as the snow continued to fall outside, she knew the storm was already coming.
Sparks in the Frost
The heavy scent of damp earth and crushed pine needles filled the outdoor training grounds. Overhead, the sky remained a bruised gray, but the biting cold of the morning had been driven back by the heat radiating from the stone sparring rings. Rows of students lined the wooden barriers, their murmurs rising like steam in the crisp air. It was a day…
