The Price of Truth
The blue glow of the laptop screen painted Freya Blackwood's face in the cramped apartment, casting long shadows across stacks of unfinished notes and cold coffee mugs. Rain hammered the single window, a relentless drumbeat against the glass. On the screen sat the file she was never meant to open: a digital trail linking Titan Dynamics' recent merger to a web of offshore accounts. Payments funneled through shell companies. Dates that matched a string of unexplained political deaths. Her fingers hovered over the send button on an encrypted email to her editor. One click, and the story would land. One click, and the world would know.
She never got the chance.
The front door exploded inward with a crack of splintering wood. Two men in black tactical gear poured through the ruined frame, silenced pistols raised and locked on her. Freya's chair toppled as she lunged for the window. Her shoulder slammed into the frame. She scrambled onto the fire escape, metal rungs slick under her bare feet, and dropped into the rain-slicked alley below. Her knees jarred on impact. She pushed up and ran.
A third man waited at the mouth of the alley, weapon already trained. The cold press of a silenced barrel kissed her forehead. Freezing rain plastered her hair to her face. Her heart slammed against her ribs hard enough to bruise.
"End of the road," the gunman said.
Tires shrieked on wet asphalt. A black armored SUV barreled into the alley, headlights cutting white blades through the downpour. The vehicle skidded to a stop. The driver's door flew open. Elias Thorne stepped out like a shadow given form, tall and unyielding, every line of him cut from controlled violence. He moved without wasted motion. One hand locked around the gunman's wrist. The other drove an elbow into the man's throat. The pistol clattered to the ground. Elias twisted, and the attacker folded with a wet crack of bone.
Above them, the two men from the apartment spilled onto the fire escape. Elias raised a compact sidearm and fired twice. The shots were flat, efficient. Both bodies dropped, one tumbling into the dumpster below. Rain washed blood into the gutter.
Freya stared, breath ragged. Elias turned to her. He didn't ask if she was hurt. His eyes, cold and absolute, raked over her once.
"Your life as you know it ended the moment you opened that file," he said. His voice carried the weight of command, low and unyielding. He closed the distance, gripped her upper arm, and steered her toward the open rear door of the SUV. She twisted against his hold.
"Let go of me. Who the hell are you?"
He didn't loosen his grip. "Elias Thorne. Get in."
She planted her feet. "I'm not going anywhere with a stranger who just killed three men."
His free hand caught her chin, forcing her gaze up. Rain streamed down his face. "Those three men carried my company's equipment. Custom suppressors. Communication rigs hard-coded to my secure network. I was tracking the hit team before they kicked your door in. You stumbled into something bigger than a story, Miss Blackwood. Now you belong under my protection."
He propelled her into the back seat with controlled force. She hit the leather and scrambled for the opposite door. The locks engaged with a solid electronic thunk the instant her fingers touched the handle. Elias slid behind the wheel. The engine growled to life. He tapped a remote interface on the dash; the doors sealed tighter, armored panels humming into place. Sirens wailed in the distance, growing closer.
"Unlock the doors," Freya snapped. She yanked the handle again. Nothing. "I don't take orders from private security thugs."
Elias glanced at her in the rea rview mirror as he accelerated into the night. The city lights smeared past the rain-streaked glass. "You do now. Absolute jurisdiction. That means you stay where I put you, you speak when I allow it, and you stop fighting the one man between you and a shallow grave."
She slammed a palm against the window. "I exposed a conspiracy. I don't need a babysitter. I need my editor."
"Your editor would be dead by morning. The people who sent those men don't leave witnesses or loose ends." His tone never rose. It simply filled the cabin, final and cold. "You opened a door that should have stayed shut. Titan Dynamics. Assassinations. Offshore laundering. I already knew half of it. You forced the other half into the open."
Freya's pulse hammered in her throat. She studied the hard set of his shoulders, the precise way his hands controlled the wheel. Everything about him radiated ownership. Outside, the alley and the bodies vanished behind them. The SUV cut through traffic with ruthless efficiency.
"You can't just take me," she said. Defiance edged every word, even as fear coiled tight in her stomach.
Elias didn't look back. "I already have. From this moment, you live by my rules. Break them, and the next team that comes won't miss."
The locks stayed sealed. The city swallowed the armored vehicle whole. Rain lashed the roof like applause for a bargain she never agreed to make. Freya Blackwood, who had chased truth into every dark corner, sat trapped in the back of a stranger's fortress on wheels, her independence colliding head-on with the absolute control of the man who had just rewritten her fate.
The Gilded Cage
The private elevator rose through the spine of Thorne Tower in perfect silence. Sixty stories of reinforced steel and biometric locks sealed them away from the city. Pressure shifted with the climb until Freya’s ears popped, sharp and sudden. She stood opposite Elias, rain-damp clothes clinging to her skin, pulse still hammering from the alley. He …
