The Scent of Jasmine and Blood

The blood still clung to Justin Vance’s knuckles when the Blackwood manor gates came into view. It had dried in dark crescents under his nails, the last of the rogue scout he had torn apart at the southern perimeter. Roger Newman walked half a pace behind him, silent except for the creak of his leather armor and the occasional grunt when a twisted ankle protested. The full moon hung heavy and swollen above the pines, pulling at every wolf in the territory. Justin’s own beast paced behind his ribs, restless, hungry for more than one dead trespasser.

“Double the night watch,” Justin said without looking back. His voice was low, flat, the kind that ended discussion before it started. “No more scouts get this close. If they smell weakness, they will come in force.”

Roger gave a single nod. “Already rotating the veterans. Perimeter’s tight. Won’t happen again on my watch.”

Justin did not answer. He never wasted words on reassurance. His father had wasted plenty—soft words, softer judgments—and the old Alpha had died choking on his own mercy six years ago. Justin had rebuilt every border with iron and blood since then. Softness was a luxury the pack could not afford. He wiped his hands on his torn tactical shirt and kept walking.

The manor courtyard smelled of pine resin, turned earth, and something sweeter that cut through the copper tang of battle. Jasmine. Fresh-cut stems and crushed leaves. Justin’s stride faltered for half a second before he forced it steady again. At the open kitchen doors stood Laura Taylor, arms full of bundled herbs, speaking quietly to Amanda Jackson. The head housekeeper took the bundles with practiced care, already sorting them by leaf and root. Laura’s golden-brown hair spilled over one shoulder, catching the last orange light. She wore one of those oversized sweaters that swallowed her small frame, soft denim, boots still muddy from the garden paths. Innocent. Sheltered. Completely out of place among the scarred warriors returning from the kill.

Jordan Scott stood a few yards away, arms crossed, watching his sister the way he watched every threat. The future Beta’s blue eyes flicked to Justin, then back to Laura, protective as ever.

Then Laura looked up.

Their eyes locked.

The mate bond slammed into Justin like a blade between the ribs. Heat roared through his blood. His wolf surged so hard he tasted iron on his tongue. Every instinct screamed mine. The scent of jasmine wrapped around him, clean and bright and devastating, drowning out blood and pine and the reek of the dead rogue. His vision narrowed until there was only her—hazel eyes wide, lips parted, the faint silver glow of something ancient flickering for an instant over her heart before vanishing beneath the sweater. His claws threatened under his skin. His canines ached. One step. One claim. One word and she would be his under moon and law.

He locked every muscle and crushed the bond down with brutal force. Control. Absolute control. That was the only thing that had kept the pack alive. A mate was a vulnerability. A Luna who looked like she could break under a raised voice was a liability the council would never accept and his enemies would exploit. His father’s fatal softness had started with a bond just like this. Justin would not repeat it.

“Alpha.” Jordan’s voice cut across the courtyard, tight with warning. He moved closer to Laura without seeming to. “You’re back early.”

Justin ignored him. He stopped three paces from Laura. Close enough that the bond burned hotter. Far enough that he did not reach for her. She smelled like crushed jasmine and clean rain and something older that made his wolf snarl with recognition. She did not drop her gaze the way every other she-wolf did. That alone told him she had no idea how dangerous this was.

“Herbs for Amanda,” Laura said softly. Her voice was steady, but he heard the tremor underneath. The bond had hit her too. He saw it in the flush along her throat, the way her fingers tightened on the last bundle until the stems snapped. “Feverfew and moonwort. The border scouts needed more salve.”

Amanda took the last bundle and vanished inside with a look that said she sensed trouble brewing. Justin kept his face carved from stone.

“Jordan.” He did not raise his voice. He never needed to. “Your sister has no place near pack executive matters. Keep her out of the war room, the council chambers, and the border reports. Is that clear?”

Jordan’s jaw flexed. “She’s not a child, Justin. She knows the territory better than half the scouts.”

“She is not trained for command or blood.” Justin’s silver-amber eyes never left Laura’s face. He let a fraction of the Alpha command bleed into the words. “She stays clear. That is not a request.”

Laura’s chin lifted a fraction. “I can hear you both.” The soft melodic tone carried quiet steel. “I was only delivering herbs. I have no interest in your war rooms.”

The bond twisted harder at the defiance. His wolf wanted to pin her, scent her, force the submission that every other female offered freely. Justin buried the urge so deep it left him cold. “Good. Keep it that way.”

Jordan stepped fully between them now, shoulders squared. “Careful how you speak to her. Alpha or not. She is my blood. You don’t get to freeze her out like some outsider who offended you.”

Justin finally looked at his oldest friend. The scar across his collarbone pulled when he rolled his shoulder. “I am keeping her safe from politics that will chew her up and spit out the bones. Do your duty as future Beta and keep her clear. Or I will.”

The two males stared at each other long enough for the courtyard to go silent. Roger lingered near the gates, wisely saying nothing. Laura’s breath came quicker. Justin could hear her heartbeat racing, could scent the sharp edge of fear mixed with something hotter she probably hated herself for feeling. The bond wanted her on her knees. He wanted her gone from his line of sight before he did something irreversible.

He turned away first. Control meant walking when every instinct demanded the opposite. “Roger. Full lockdown on the southern stretch until the moon wanes. No exceptions. Report at dawn.”

“Yes, Alpha.”

Justin crossed the courtyard without looking back. Each step felt like tearing muscle from bone. The wolf howled inside him, furious at the rejection. He shut the sound out the way he shut out everything soft. Behind him he heard Jordan’s low, furious voice and Laura’s quieter reply. He did not stay to listen.

Inside the manor the air was cooler, free of jasmine. Justin climbed the stairs to his private study two at a time. He locked the door, braced both hands on the heavy oak desk, and let the full weight of the bond crash through him once he was alone. His vision bled silver. Claws scored deep gouges into the wood. He breathed through it the way he breathed through every battle—until the animal rage banked to a low, constant burn.

She was his. Fate and goddess and blood said so. And he would never claim her. A gentle Luna would die under the pressure of this pack, or worse, turn him soft enough that the next border war finished what the last one started. Better she stay in the gardens with her herbs. Better Jordan kept her far from him. Better the bond choked itself out from neglect.

Down in the courtyard, Laura stood frozen long after the Alpha’s heavy steps faded. The electric pull still sang under her skin, agonizing and bright. Every part of her wanted to follow him. Every wiser part remembered the cold way he had looked through her, the order that shut her out of anything that mattered. She pressed a hand over the hidden crescent mark above her heart and felt it pulse once, warm and secret.

Jordan touched her shoulder. “You okay?”

“Fine.” The lie came easy. She had been practicing lies for months. Escape routes. Hidden caches of dried food and coin. Maps of the northern passes no one watched closely enough. The pack’s cruelty had been growing for years. She would not become another broken piece of it—not even for a mate bond that felt like destiny and drowning at the same time.

She looked toward the darkened windows of the Alpha’s wing. The pull remained, dark and relentless. She would resist it. She had to. Freedom first. Always freedom. Even if every step away from him felt like leaving a piece of her soul bleeding on the stone.

The moon climbed higher. Somewhere beyond the walls, rogues gathered. Inside the manor, the Alpha locked his door and his heart. And Laura Taylor began counting the nights until she could run.

Shadows of the Court

The grand dining hall of Blackwood Manor glowed under iron chandeliers, the long oak table polished to a dark mirror. Pack nobility filled the high-backed chairs, their muted conversations thick with the scent of roasted venison and old power. Alpha Justin Vance sat at the head, silver-amber eyes flat, the scar across his collarbone half-hidden by
